Tired Iron Slump Dump
April 1, 2022 - May 31, 2022
Opening April 1, 2022
Tired Iron Slump Dump is an oversized moving diorama meant to be operated by two performers. “Tired iron” is an expression used by the aviation industry alluding to old airplanes that need to be retired. This exhibit examines burnout during the pandemic and how the pressures of our productivity culture haunt us even in the midst of world wide disaster and collective illness. Exploring grief, fatigue and delusion, the work takes a whimsical approach to processing the harm caused by imbalanced systems and the need to rethink labor. Hunched, limp mops, a symbol of exhausted labor, nearby spilled red liquid denotes a loss of life force. Stairs leading to nowhere signifies tension between the need for retreat and a sense of stagnated progress. Overall, the work invites catharsis through humor and abstraction, leaving the viewer to process their own version of pandemic conditions.
